If there is no sound on your Apple TV while playing music or video, you may get frustrated. This happens due to misconfiguration of audio settings, defective cables, outdated firmware, etc. Sometimes, the device’s hardware may be faulty due to wear and tear, so there will be no sound. This article explains what you need to do to fix the audio issue on your Apple TV. These solutions will work for all Apple TV models, including the latest one, Apple TV 4K.
Possible Solutions to Fix No Sound Issue on Apple TV
The following troubleshooting methods will help you fix the no-sound issue without contacting Apple TV customer service.
Unmute the Volume on Apple TV
Though this seems juvenile, you might have unknowingly turned your Apple TV into a mute mode, which could also be a reason for the silence on your Apple TV. If that’s the problem, you have to unmute Apple TV by pressing the Mute button once on your Siri remote.
Meanwhile, if your Siri remote controller doesn’t have a built-in mute button, you can simply increase the media volume by pressing the Volume Up button on a Siri remote.
Check the Apple TV Remote
Since the volume buttons are working properly, it is also mandatory to check the remote control and ensure it is error-free.
- Check whether your remote has an active battery connection. If the batteries on your remote are low, charge your Apple TV remote and try increasing the volume.
- Check whether the volume rocker keys on your remote are functioning properly by pressing the buttons.
- Restart your Apple TV remote to fix the minor bugs and glitches on your Siri remote.
- If you still find issues with the remote, then use the Apple TV remote app to turn on the sound.
Change Audio Format
Do you know that the audio on your Apple TV can be played in different formats? If you can’t hear any audio, you have to change the audio format of your Apple TV.
1. Open Settings on your Apple TV using the Siri remote.
2. Under settings, select the Vidoe and Audio option and click on Audio Format.
3. Check and Turn on Change Format. You can choose Auto, Dolby Digital 5.1, or Stereo 2.0.
Select and try each option and choose the one that makes sound on your Apple TV.
Restart the Internet Network
If you stream any content or media through a streaming service like Netflix or Prime Video on Apple TV, check whether the internet connection is stable and efficient. Sometimes, due to poor internet, the audio may not be emitted from your TV. If the network is the reason for the sound issue, restart your internet by unplugging your WiFi router from the power outlet and plugging it back. After that, reconnect your Apple TV to the WiFi network and ensure the sound issue is solved. If not, jump to the next procedure.
Restart Apple TV
Sometimes, your Apple TV may have technical glitches, including the sound issue, which can be rectified by simply restarting your Apple TV.
1. Navigate to Settings with the help of the Siri remote.
2. Under settings, select System or General and tap on Restart.
After a successful restart, all the temporary audio errors will be eliminated from your Apple TV.
Check the Temporary Audio Output
Occasionally, you might have connected your Apple TV to a temporary audio output. So, after using an external device as a temporary source, you must change the settings to TV Speakers to hear the audio from your Apple TV-connected device.
1. Open Settings on your TV using the Siri remote.
2. Tap on the Video and Audio option and select Audio Output.
3. Under Audio Output, change the audio to default by selecting TV speakers.
Sometimes, you might have connected your TV to external speakers via HDMI cable. So check the HDMI cable you are using and ensure it is connected to the device properly.
Update Apple TV Firmware
If the sound issue is caused due to software issues, you can try updating your Apple TV’s firmware. Before proceeding, connect your Apple TV to a strong WiFi network.
1. Open Settings on your Apple TV using the Siri remote and click the System option.
2. Tap Software Updates on the next page and click Update Software.
Once you click, your Apple TV will start to update. After updating the firmware, check the audio on your Apple TV and make sure it’s fixed.
Factory Reset Apple TV
If the problem still occurs, it is better to reset the Apple TV to its factory settings. It will revert all the settings, audio formats, and other settings to its defaults.
1. Grab the Siri remote and launch the Settings app on your Apple TV.
2. Under settings, select System, and choose Reset.
3. Again, accept the confirmation prompt by clicking the Reset button.
Once it completes resetting, check whether you can hear sound on your Apple TV.
